METROPOLITAN RESIGNS AS ORDINARY OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF THE AMERICAS & DEPENDENCIES

Evlogia Kyriou! The Blessing of the Lord!
Doxa si Kyrie! Glory to God!

The Metropolia hereby releases the unexpected and very sad news of the resignation of Metropolitan Stephen as Archbishop Hierarch of the Archdiocese of the Americas and All Dependencies. This was tendered to the Synod of Bishops on August 11th, 2007 by His Beatitude. The Synod was surprised to hear His Beatitude read the official letter. He advised us all that he has been fighting with this decision and in deliberation over it since June 2006. He did not disclose this to anyone until the Synodal Consistory. His Beatitude asked that the Synod not use their right to contest his resignation, but to understand his reasons and simply put it all in the hands of God. This does not affect his position of Metropolitan Primate of the Church.

His Beatitude became very emotional as he stated the reasons for his decision that included years of pain and suffering that have become unbearable with his current health issues; a lack of support from many at the annual conferences; and most importantly his medical conditions. These include an over twenty-five year battle with Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, Prednisone related Diabetes, and his heart condition among other issues. Those who heard him share his thoughts suffered with him as he spoke. Bishop Cyril of Nicaragua voiced his objection and concerns, and expressed his love and support for the Metropolitan. Bishop Cyril was ordained by the Archbishop in 1990 and certainly has known His Beatitude longer than many alive today. Bishop Simeon of Cleveland Ohio was also shocked by the announcement but gave his support to the Metropolitan. All the bishops pledged their support of his decision and also to him.

It has always been the custom in our jurisdiction that the Metropolitan holds the place of honor in the Church as Primate, in the Synod as Protohierarch, and in the Archdiocese as its Archbishop or Bishop Ordinary; three big jobs for one man. This has been the case since 1892 except briefly in 1989 when Metropolitan Joseph took ill turning the Metropolia and Archdiocese over to Bishop (Metropolitan) Stephen. However, Metropolitan Stephen did not use his office or titles until after the death of Metropolitan Joseph in April of 1989. His Beatitude expressed his desire to see such a tradition broken allowing bishops more participation in the administration of the Archdiocese, and its welfare. It has never been a hidden secret that His Beatitude is not a lover of power and has always desired help from others in the administration of the Archdiocese. He has always been a servant to those he served throughout the Church. His establishment of three vicariates now eases his work at Metropolitan, and has opened the doors to greater administrative participation of the Synod in Archdiocese, a very historic event in the life of the Church.

His Beatitude expressed his hurt over the years of seeing many who failed to be here annually, year after year, for the Clergy-Laity Congress and Commission Conference, and those who were not here with him this year to share in what he wanted everyone to hear. He has always looked upon all juridical and regular members as his family. He was very happy that those who were present were supportive, and understood why some could not be here as well. Metropolitan Stephen has kept many of his emotional and spiritual and physical pains to himself over the years; although as he expressed to us all that he felt like a failure we rapidly denied this and advised him of his many achievements. When he became Primate the Church had only approximately 5,000 faithful throughout the world and today it has 25,000. He fought for the rights of the Commission in 1993 in Colorado, and won, although that led to attacks against him by the Assistant Attorney General there. He almost single-handedly established the first on-campus and distance education University for the Church in 1988, with help from Archimandrite Mark, using his own money. He is one of only two of the six Metropolitans in 115 years who saw the retirement of mortgage for the Mother Cathedral of the Church. There are many other accomplishments but room does not permit a listing of all.

His Beatitude has not made any decision concerning his office of Metropolitan, but hopes to see many positive changes in the years ahead as he contemplates this high position within the Church. He remains our Primate and still has jurisdiction over all within the Church. Issues affecting the Archdiocese and its organizations should now be referred to me, Bishop Timothy, at  and His Beatitude wishes that all who do not hear from me please advise him. His resignation becomes official at next Synod in August 2008, and this year is a period of training for me as I prepare to become the eighth Archbishop to serve the Archdiocese of the Americas and Dependencies. I will do my very best to serve as His Beatitude has for twenty years done before me, the longest number of years of service of any of our previous Metropolitans, except Metropolitan Timotheos, our first Archbishop. He served for twenty-eight years (1892-1920) as Archbishop of the Archdiocese as well as Primate. Many Years Metropolitan Stephen! God grant him Many Years!

HIS BEATITUDE'S RESIGNATION

By Bishop Timothy of Duluth (MN)

During the pontificate of Metropolitan Timotheos (of Blessed Memory) it became the tradition for the Primate of the Church to also be the Bishop Ordinary of the Archdiocese. As I read the history of our jurisdiction I see that all the Primates of the Church had their concerns and problems, but the Church has grown a great deal since then. Previous Metropolitans had more clergy that assisted them with their administrative responsibilities, but Metropolitan Stephen has done it alone for some years and more recently with the assistance of one or two others residing with him. Living with him for nearly thirteen years I have seen the hard work that he has done, work that would have caused others to just walk away from in complete despair and frustration. I have seen this man make everyone he knows well part of his family, I have also seen some of pain and betrayal that comes with such an office.

As the Synod and Conference were approaching, he exposed his feelings that he knew many would not be here – something that he feared and an issue that hurt him. He withheld his resignation from everyone, including me. This must have been very hard for him, usually so open and forthright. However he did, and never once alluded to the issue or even hinted about it. I saw that something had been on his mind for a long time, and whatever it was certainly caused his stress and depression. During the Synodal Consistory his emotions welled and he broke into tears as he read his announcement. Over the years I saw this man forgive many who have hurt and offended him. I have also seen some who purposely went out of their way to malign him and make him suffer. I guess when you see what he has went through especially since the State of Colorado's persecution in 1994 it is easy to understand why he tendered his resignation this year. In fact, for a long time I have been in awe of the strength of charachter that would allow someone to hang on to faith against all odds. Oh, certainly he is a sinner just like all mankind, but he has always been faithful to the Church, his position, and all those he has served. Many fail to understand how hard it is to run a Church on a shoestring, especially one as worn and frayed as the one God has blessed us with. I have seen him serve others as their secretaries, including me, ignoring the nobility of his office.

We must realize that he has hit a time in his life when he just cannot be ten different things to 25,000 people any longer. He will be able to enjoy the long awaited respit from administration he deserves. There are those who dislike him because he enforces the canons and does not deviate from what is good and worthy tradition, but those who understand him for this – respect him. I only pray that the day does not come when he also wants to leave his sacred position of Primate of the Church. This will certainly be a day of great sorrow and disappointment to many – especially us bishops who serve him. I ask your prayers for Metropolitan Stephen, and I ask that when we are called together next year that all will come as this will be the last Conference he will sit at as Bishop Ordinary of the Archdiocese. I ask that all give him a day to remember with much joy.

God be merciful to us all.

Bishop Timothy of Duluth

METROPOLITAN'S LETTER OF RESIGNATION

Wednesday, August 01, 2007
[Read during the Synodal Consistory by His Beatitude]

The Synod of Bishops and Chancery
5907 Grand Avenue
Duluth MN 55807

Re: Resignation

Most Reverend Bishops and Esteemed Advisors and Members of the Chancery:

Evlogite! Blessings!

Doxa Patri ke Io ke Agio Pnefmati, nyn ke ai ke is tous eonas ton eonon. Amin!
Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and unto ages of ages. Amen!

When Metropolitan Joseph of Blessed Memory asked me in 1986 what I would be willing to do for the Church, I said that I would serve and defend it with my life and all the energy within me. I had no idea that this response would later be the reason I would be elected to the Synod of Bishops. However, in 1987 I was consecrated a bishop of the Church. This was not my desire and I fought this as much as possible. Although not my desire, it obviously was the desire of thye Church. Soon after this, Archbishop Joseph's health began to deteriorate because of arthritis that had riddled his body with much pain and disfiguration. He called me to advise that I would succeed him upon his death and that all his advisors agreed. In 1989, I was enthroned as Archbishop, and in April 1989 after his death, I succeeded Archbishop Joseph as the Sixth Primate of the Church.

I was not under any false illusions as to what I would face in time to come. I saw the sufferings that Archbishop Joseph endured but never thought for one minute that my sufferings would be greater than his, at least I prayed that they would not. I did not believe that I would be able to handle the sacred and honorable position entrusted to me. With great fear and doubt in my heart, mind, and soul, and knowing that I was not worthy, I accepted this cross. I was younger than all others before me, and a man who knew that I was an unworthy sinner, but I remembered my words to Archbishop Joseph that I would serve and defend the Church with my life. Finally, after a few months, realization of what occurred sank in and I began to realize that I was now at the top and a life of loneliness, the same that all my five predecessors endured, was now facing me. No one likes those who make decisions that may affect their lives one way or the other, and I was to be no different. What I did not realize then was that I would one day be hated by some who would crucify me over and over for the rest of my natural life.

I have earlier discussed the atrocities of Colorado and Minnesota. I have explained my sins and my innocence. I have endured attacks from Assistant Attorney General Tony yl of Colorado that were prompted by so-called religious leaders. Abused, Accused, and Misused are words that I have become very familiar with especially since 1994. I have been attacked because of my loyalty to what is truth and blessed by Almighty God. I have been emotionally tortured because of my defense of natural healing. I have been used by many who befriended me just to find a safe haven or get what they wanted in life but then stabbed me in the back and left me to emotionally die. I watched my mother die in my arms and the next day have to return to the work of the Church. I watched my chancellor die and the same day had to attend a meeting concerning foreign missions. Always my role as an Archbishop and Primate had to come before all else never having time to grieve or set free the emotions within after having watched so many close to me pass on. I have now reached the reality of my own emotional death where my feelings have become a melting pot of confused thoughts, unwarranted and often warranted suspicions, and sincere doubts. There are times I can not think clearly because of the heartaches that I have suffered, still suffer, and those that I know are waiting to come at me. I know that I committed myself to God and all those I serve -–but it has become harder recently for me to make good that promise. The Church and all of you, and over 25,000 faithful that I serve throughout the world, mean so much to me. I do not want to let any of you down, but even more than that I do not wish to be known as a failure. I have worked endlessly for many hours each day for the last 15 years to keep the Church alive and well, yet I still never get all accomplished and many new issues face me each day. I never get ahead and have never reached a point of being caught up. I can only ask your forgiveness for those issues I have failed to complete, and your understanding and support in the days that are left before me.

I have found it very hard as a priest and bishop to forgive those who have offended me at times, but now I release all the ill-feelings within me and forgive them all no matter what they have done to me. Those who have attacked my good name and indirectly the Church are also forgiven, but that does not mean I do not plan to expose the wrongdoers in order to clear the name of the Church. Feelings of anger have plagued me far too long, and although Christ Himself was angered on several occasions, I am certain that He is not happy with the many times I have succumbed to this. My days left here on this beautiful earth are known only to God, but there is no doubt in my mind that clocks continually tick and no one knows when our time is up. So I must do what I must do no matter how much it may hurt me so long as it is done for the good of the Church. There comes a time when a sincere person must realize that limitations, because of health or other reasons, might be prohibiting what must be done by them for the good of all. As painful as it is, I have realized this, and I realize that my time is drawing near when some responsibilities must be handed over to another. It has always been the custom in our jurisdiction that the Metropolitan be Primate of the Church and Episcopal Ordinary of the Archdiocese, but perhaps the time has come to set a new tradition.

Therefore, I humbly submit my resignation this day from my obligations and responsibilities to the Archdiocese of the Americas and Dependencies as its Archbishop Ordinary. However, I shall continue as such for a period of one full year in order to train (and prepare) my successor but this will become officially effective on August 7th, A.D. 2008, so long as my health permits and it is the will of God. I do not abdicate from the Office of Metropolitan Primate at this time.

Furthermore, it was voted upon by the Synod of Bishops in 2006, and passed, that Bishop Timothy of Duluth be made my Coadjutor Bishop, and this has been done with my blessing. Therefore, I hereby announce that at the next Synod in August 2008, Bishop Timothy will be made Archbishop with the responsibility over the Archdiocese of the Americas and Dependencies. I will enthrone him as such, and my assistant and witnesses will be Bishop Simeon of Cleveland and Bishop Cyril of Nicaragua. Should anything prevent me from so doing, then Bishop Simeon as second bishop in seniority here in the United States, shall perform the Rite of Enthronement and Bishop Cyril and another bishop of choice will assist him. Father Stephen Lawrence will serve as Notary because of his Office of Judicial Vicar. Father Steven Johnson will serve as chaplain to the Archbishop-elect. The Synod of Bishops does have the right to contest my resignation within the year requested for just cause, but I ask that they do not exercise this right. If at any time during my life or after the Archbishop-elect does not carry on what I, and others before me, have done and in the manner in which we have performed our duties, then he should be reprimanded. This to be done by the Judicial Vicar of the Metropolia and at least one other bishop. If such continues, then the Synod of Bishops shall decide the future of his position. Pray God Almighty there will be no reason to exercise this right. However, his actions should never be attacked unjustly and without warrant.

Bishop Simeon will assist the Archbishop-elect with matters affecting the Archdiocese within the United States and Canada, and Bishop Cyril will assist him with matters affecting the Church within all foreign territories outside North America except for India and Pakistan (and other territories placed under the oversight of others).

I pray that God has accepted all that I have done for the Archdiocese since 1989, and that the faithful are happy with me in all that I have tried to accomplish. If I have failed, I ask your forgiveness.

Doxa si Kyrie!

UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX AUTOCEPHALIC PRIMATE SENDS OPEN LETTER TO METROPOLITAN PRIMATE STEPHEN AND SYNOD OF BISHOPS ON SCOBA

By Metropolitan Haralambos

July 11th, 2007

Dear Brother Bishops in Christ,

The true acronym for SCOBA was originally Standing Conference Orthodox Bishops in America. There never was or intended to include as name or agenda the added recent word Canonical. This is a fact and ecclesiastical noted history since its inception in 1960. My jurisdiction was a founding member, represented by Archbishop Palladios.

We never have voluntarily seceded, nor been excommunicated by any representative council of SCOBA. You have my permission to challenge the SCOBA President Archbishop Demetrios to present any record contrary to my statement. I have repeatedly requested in writing to examine any SCOBA recorded document that would support a negative position to the above statements; therefore we remain an ecclesiastical refugee by false statements as your Beatitude Metropolitan Stephen has also endured.

The purpose of this letter is to request your reading it at the First Council of Canonical Autocephalous Orthodox Bishops Meeting, August 4, 2007. It becomes appratent by forming this council it gives credence. We outcasts named from the Greek Orthodox jurisdictions have need of rebuttal in an organized fashion. We know God – ICXC – has ordained us, will protect us, will prosper us, will guide us by His Holy Spirit. I do not wish to enter into any anti-dialogue, nor give credibility to my brother Greek Bishops by any answer to their foolishness, especially by their introducing error and false judgments.

I was born, baptized a Greek Orthodox at St Nicholas Cathedral. My father was born in Sparta, Greece, which entitles me to dual Greek and American citizenship. My ordination and elevation lines are strong and pure and without interruption going back to the original apostolicity of Christ. Do not even respect the vertical integration of the power struggle to be antipopes by the misguided hierarchy, emulating from foreign countries, that God is using to punish heretical teachings of some of our ecumenical synods, whose purpose is to organize, captivate, eliminate collegiality and finally retrieve monies, lucre, from jurisdictions in a wealthy America.

Jesus said the gates of hell will not prevail to deter His Church. Let's not enter ourselves to meet the enemy, St Michael the Archangel will protect us and the Blessed Virgin Mary will intercede for us to serve Her Son ultimately.

WHY ARE CHARISMATIC PROTESTANTS SUCCESSFUL?

By Father Steven Johnson

This question is one whose answer was long in coming to me. Having come from a very strong Protestant background it is very easy looking back now.

When I was a child my family was originally Lutheran, and when that did not suit us anymore we became Baptist, then Agape, and then Pentecostal and so on. We would find a church and go every week and it would become our all-encompassing thought, and whenever we would move or just need a change in our lives we would attend another church. My thoughts of these churches at the time were that I was more and more impressed with the church when they would dance and sing and invoke the Holy Spirit (including speaking in tongues and healing). I thought that surely these people must have the message of God because I would feel this welling up inside me as the frenzy grew. In this lies the secret to their success. I cannot say that these people do not have their hearts in the right place, nor can I say these people are doing the work of Satan. What I can say is this, they were more likely raised in the faith and they just hold on so that they cannot see beyond where they are.

The "circus-like attitude" that surround these services are all-encompassing and run so deep that it actually is depressing as we leave these churches. In psychology we learn that around these hyped-up situations an endorphin reaction takes place. Endorphins cause us to feel euphoric and is the principal cause of the condition known as "Mob Mentality." In this condition we become less and less likely to oppose the direction that the group is going. For example, when the group decided to speak in tongues, we speak in tongues, or when Mrs Smith falls down after the pastor puts his hand on her head - that is what we decided to do also. This has become extremely evident on college campuses around America. One example was the Maryland Terrapins. In the early 2000's, security officers quelled sports-related rioting at least three times in as many years. After a major basketball loss in 2000, one thousand freshmen and sophomores swarmed across the campus and caused significant property damage. Following a win versus their hated rival Duke in 2002, 18 people, including three students, were arrested after a crowd of about 3,000 tramped down Route 1, setting fires and throwing trash. That being said, these churches can be viewed as being very similar; the group dynamic is amazingly powerful. As the circus like environment winds up we become enthralled almost to a point of frenzy. The preacher spitting hellfire, the choir backing up all of the preacher's sermon, and people waving their arms and speaking gibberish.

All of these elements mingle together to take our minds away from God and put them on what is happening at the moment. While these people think they are feeling the Spirit, they are actually being swept away further and further from God. This is why I love the Orthodox Church. The services aren't wild - but beautiful, not frenzied - but solemn. This is how we are to come to God. He draws us in softly like a calm cool breeze. He is our eternal Father and needs not resort to cheap tricks to get us to love Him. Nor does He need to frighten us with hell-fire, for His love is all encompassing and those who would only seek Him easily find him.

ORTHODOX BITS N' PIECES

Q. Who was the Patriarch and Pope at the time of the Great Schism?" Name Withheld (Chicago IL)

A. The Great Schism that divided the Universal Church into two, i.e., East and West, occurred in A.D. 1054. Pope Leo was the Patriarch of the West and Patriarch Michael was the Patriarch of the East at that time.

Q . What is Arianism? John Morreno (Dallas TX)

A. Arianism is sometimes referred to as the major heresy in the early Church that denied the Divinity of Christ. It taught that Christ was not co-eternal with the Father, and that God created the Son as an instrument of salvation for the world. This heresy was condemned at Nicea in A.D. 325.

THE SAINTS AND FEASTS OF THE CHURCH

St Andrew the First-Called

He was the brother of Simon, also called Peter, who later also became an apostle of the Lord. St Andrew was a fisherman by trade in Bethsaida and was the first to be called to follow Christ (John 1:37-40). According to Church tradition he suffered martyrdom at Patras in Achaia on an X-shaped Cross (St Andrew's Cross). Another tradition says that he visited Russia as a missionary as far as the city of Kiev (while some say Novgorod). His feast day is November 30th.

MEMBERS WITHOUT A PARISH

The Syro-Russian Orthodox Catholic Church, like other small and smaller Orthodox jurisdictions, realizes that there are members who live far away from the nearest parish to them. In some cases, there exist parishes of other jurisdictions that are in communion with us or in which mutual recognition has been exchanged. In such cases our members may attend these churches until one of ours is opened in their locality. In other cases, there are those living in an area with no parish at all to attend, and for them they may belong to the Pro-Cathedral of St Mary and be on its rolls as a member. Such persons would be allowed to use the Typica Service within their homes on Sunday and Holy Days. Domestic Churches may be established in homes until a parish or mission can be officially established. "Distance Parishioners" would also be allowed to make their 10% tithe to St Mary's uniting them to the parish in good standing. For further information contact Bishop Timothy at  . If you are interested in assisting the Archdiocese to establish a mission parish in your area, please write to the same email address..

ENCAPSULATED NOTES FROM SYNOD AND CONFERENCE

The following are notes from the Synod of Bishops Consistory, Clergy-Laity Congress, and Commission Conference – August 3rd through August 12th, A.D. 2007.

Synodal Consistory and Conference 2007

  1. His Beatitude Metropolitan Stephen opened the Synod of Bishops' Consistory. After prayers he addressed the Bishops and advisors of his plans to divide the Archdiocese into three Vicariates, i.e., Eastern USA & Canada, Western USA & Canada, and Central and South America (and Mexico). He explained the reasons and advised that the work and administration of all these areas by the Metropolitan is becoming to great. Sharing responsibilities among the bishops makes more sense and brings each of them closer to the faithful and the Church worldwide. This was approved.
  2. His Beatitude announced his resignation as Bishop Ordinary of the Archdiocese. He explained health issues and the enormous amount of work that he has endured for many years that is now catching up to him. This became a very emotional time for him and us all. He elaborated on the many hurts and pains and frustrations that he has suffered through the years bringing him to his decision. These issues are captured on the CDs offered for sale through the Metropolia. His resignation will officially take effect next year at Synod (and Conference) 2008. He will remain the Primate of the Church. His Excellency Bishop Timothy was named successor Bishop Ordinary of the Archdiocese and Archbishop-elect. Again, all were in agreement. However, in the issue of resignation all were in agreement but with reservations and concerns.
  3. It was decided that foreign territories be placed under Archdiocesan bishops for now while these areas strive to become more familiar with the Orthodox faith and traditions. Nigeria has been a big concern for the Metropolia since 2006. It was agreed that Nigeria, Tanzania, and Pakistan be placed under Bishop Simeon; that Kenya and Cuba be placed under Bishop Cyril, and that The Congo, England and Ireland be placed under Bishop Timothy. In addition, Archpriest Stephen Lawrence will oversee Greece. Chorbishop Joseph was degraded to Archpriest because of his failure to be present at Synod since 1992. Bishop John of India was advised that he must be present next year at Synod or the Diocese of India would become a Vicariate of the Metropolia.
  4. Chartering of Theocentric Counseling Centers was discussed. It was made clear that such institutions receiving total protection of the Church must meet the criteria to be chartered and the annual obligations. A 10% quarterly tithe based on gross income was approved by the Synod of Bishops, just the same as for any parish of the Archdiocese. This will be explained later on to all. The clerical and parochial tithe was also discussed and all bishops agreed that this must be met by all capable of so doing or annual charters will be withheld. This will also be explained later this year by a special communication from the Metropolia.
  5. Departments and Commissions of the Church were brought up and reviewed. His Beatitude mentioned that too many organizations exist with a lack of manpower. He suggested combining some into one and that was approved. The "Director of Vocations and Prefect of Seminarians" will be dissolved and replaced with a "Director of Vocations" overseeing seminary applicants, seminarians, and the discipline of all those studying to be permanent deacons or priests. Father Steven Johnson was recommended and approved. The "Department of Publications" was renamed the "Department of Publications and Media." His Beatitude suggested that all proceeds from this department go to assist our missionaries and foreign missions and advertising, and this was approved. The "Commission on Worship and Holy Mysteries" will be overseen by a Liturgist to be named by the Metropolia in time. The "Commission on Pastoral Care, Wellness and Counseling" (which includes the Commission on Counseling and Healing) will continue to be under a Moderator.
  6. It was voted on and passed by the Synod that Lamentations will be held on Good Friday within our jurisdiction during Holy Week. Also approved, the blessing of the Paschal Candle to be on Holy Saturday prior to the Paschal Liturgy, at Vespers. The Synod also voted in favor of continuing the custom of wearing the red zuchetto by bishops. Also approved was a delegation to visit Tanzania Africa in 2008 and meeting there with representatives from Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya, and The Congo.
  7. Bishop Cyril of Nicaragua was named interim Archabbot of the Monastic Community of St Basil until August 2008, and Vicar Bishop of Central and South America and Mexico. Bishop Simeon of Cleveland was named Vicar Bishop of the Eastern USA and Canada Vicariate. Father Stephen Lawrence was named interim Vicar Administrator of the Western USA and Canada Vicariate. It was also approved that the Board of Officers for the Commission on Religious Counseling and Healing be restructured.
  8. The Synod of Bishops agreed that all licensed providers must attend the annual conferences of the Commission, and clergy must attend annual Synod and Conference. One is exempt from this directive only if he/she be ill and can verify this; indigent (living below poverty level) with permission not to attend; foreign without visa and/or funds; or out of the country on necessary job-related business.
  9. Dr Peter Smyth and Dr William Easley both gave presentations to all present on issues affecting providers. Their presentations will be found on the CDs offered by the Metropolia. The revised Divine Liturgy was approved, and the 2008 Code of Canons of the Church were also approved pending some corrections and additions.
  10. Bishop Simeon proposed the "Axios Fellowship Fund" that would exist to help pay for a secretary or secretaries for the Metropolia. This would be a joint effort of both the Clergy and Licensed Providers of the Church. It was suggested that each person give a monthly donation to support this effort, and those who faithfully give will receive a certificate from the Synod of Bishops at the end of each year. This would be a tax-deductible donation. This was approved by the Synod.

METROPOLITAN ANNOUNCES SYNOD AND CONFERENCE FOR 2008

By His Beatitude Metropolitan Archbishop Stephen

I am asking all my brothers and sisters in Christ God to make plans to be with me at the next Synodal Consistory and Clergy-Laity Congress, and the Commission Conference in 2008. I am asking that all be present for this most important event in the life of our Church. The attendance in 2007 was most disappointing and I believe in my heart that all will make an honest effort to make next year a time of joy.

I have set the Synodal Consistory and Clergy-Laity Congress to begin on Saturday August 2nd, 2008 and to end on Thursday August 7th, 2008, with the Commission Conference opening on Friday August 8th , 2008 and ending on Sunday August 10th, 2008. The Synodal sessions will begin at 11:00 a.m. each day and end at 8:30 p.m. each day with Vespers on the days announced. The Commission sessions will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. each day. The Commission Conference does not end until after Divine Liturgy on Sunday August 10th, 2008 and those who do not attend the closing Liturgy will not be awarded annual CEU credits for attendance. It is honorable for all providers to end such an event by giving worship and thanksgiving to God.

In my years as a priest, Diocesan Bishop, Archbishop and Metropolitan, I have always had the greatest respect and admiration for those who serve the healing ministry of God. I have worked hard to see the Commission fully established and opened to all sincere persons, and protected by the canons of the Church. In so doing, I have suffered greatly over the years. Those who come and participate to the end of the Conference by attending Liturgy are to be commended, for you realize who and what you are in relationship to God. My prayer now is for all that serve the Commission to realize this very same thing and show it this coming year as we end the annual Conference.
