METROPOLIA ANNOUNCES DATE OF CONSECRATION FOR BISHOP-ELECT CYRIL OF NICARAGUA

Evlogia Kyriou! The Blessing of the Lord!
Doxa si Kyrie! Glory to God!

The Metropolia, and the Monastic Community of St Basil, would like to announce to all the faithful of the Archdiocese throughout the world that, Right Reverend Archimandrite Cyril (Cranshaw) has been canonically elected to the Synod of Bishops. He will be consecrated on Sunday August 5th, 2007 at 10:30 A.M. at Divine Liturgy. Metropolitan Stephen assisted by Bishop Timothy of Duluth (MN) and Bishop Simeon of Cleveland (OH), and assisted by other Bishops of the Synod, will consecrate him.

This event will be a historic one in the Syro-Russian Orthodox Catholic Church. On this day Bishop-elect Cyril will become the very first bishop to ever serve Nicaragua of the Church, and he will become the first Hispanic in the Synod of Bishops in over fifty years, and the first to be consecrated by a Primate of the Church. He has been a monastic for almost twenty years and has served the Church with great dedication and sincerity as a priest for that time. He has served parishes in New Mexico, California, and now in Nicaragua. He also does missionary work in Guatemala, Colombia, and will soon begin in Mexico. May God grant unto him many years!

Metropolitan Stephen
(Sinful Servant of God in the Blessed Trinity)

FEASTS AND SAINTS OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH

Dates are given first according to Julian Calendar and then Gregorian Calendar.

TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD

(August 6th on the Gregorian – August 19th on Church Calendar)
This holy day commemorates the appearance of Jesus Christ in the glory of His Divinity as manifested before Ss Peter, James and John. It is also called "Metemorphosis," i.e., a transformation in a person effected by the Holy Spirit. "And behold, two men talked with Him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of His departure…" (Luke 9:29-36).In the Old Testament, the presence of light and clouds often signified Divine Presence, (Exodus 24:15-17 and Exodus 34:29-35). Likewise, on Mt Tabor the cloud signified the Divine Presence – the God-Man Jesus Christ, and the Theophany here was accompanied by a bright radiance. The Lord took His three closest disciples (Peter, James and John) with Him on the mountain. Although God sometimes reveals Himself to sinners in quite unexpected ways, it is usually those who have followed Him long and faithfully who are privileged to enter into the joy of the Transfiguration of the Master.

ST STEPHEN PROTOMARTYR

(December 26 th on the Gregorian – January 8th on the Church Calendar)
St Stephen was a Jew whose name means "Crown" or "Crowned One" that comes from the Greek word "Stephana." It is generally allowed that he was one of the seventy-two disciples of Jesus chosen by the apostles. He was the first to suffer martyrdom for Christianity and was stoned to death for his loyalty to the faith of our Lord. He had primacy among all the deacons chosen by the apostles, and so is called Protodeacon as well.

1ST COUNCIL OF CANONICAL AUTOCEPHALOUS ORTHODOX BISHOPS

"The Council of Canonical Autocephalous Orthodox Bishops will become a shinning example to all others of how true Orthodox Christians should live together in peace and love for the greater glory of God, and the good continuity of His Holy Church." (Stated by Archbishop Stephen at the announcement of the First Council).

The First Council (CCAOB) will take place in 2007 from Sunday August 5th- Tuesday August 7th at St Mary Cathedral in Duluth Minnesota. This meeting will be most important for the "structured continuity" of the Council, and for the establishment of future requirements and expectations of new members to it. At this time, it is planned that those who have been admitted will share in a concelebrated Divine Liturgy on the closing day of Council I - Wednesday August 8th, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. at the Cathedral. Meals will be served during the actual three days of events.

SO WHAT IS THIS ORGANIZATION CALLED "SCOBA?"

By His Excellency Bishop Timothy of Duluth

This article written with the full blessing of His Beatitude, Metropolitan Archbishop Stephen, who has suffered attacks against him by members of this group since 1994.

"SCOBA" is actually an acronym for an organization known as Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas , but it is not as canonical as it wants everyone to believe. On January 8th, 2007, originally published in Solia, "The Herald (November/December 2006) under Archbishop Nathaniel of Detroit (Romanian Orthodox Church) made his feelings known about this group. The article starts off with "SCOBA HAS NO CANONICAL AUTHORITY…"

Archbishop Nathaniel attended the SCOBA event in Chicago Illinois (October 3-6, 2006) that allowed non-SCOBA members to attend, what most refer to as a episcopal country club, their conference. He had this to say: "SCOBA has no canonical authority, and even if one would like to acknowledge a "benefit" of the hierarchs meeting one another through this organization, (as some are quick to point out from past pan-Orthodox "meetings" at WCC and NCC convocations), the reality of the total lack of collegiality is foreign to Orthodoxy. One cringes to read that something "falls under the jurisdiction of SCOBA" as is stated on some websites and forms of communication." SCOBA is not collegial at all, and the nine members who make all the decisions, under the chairmanship of Greek Orthodox Archbishop Demetrios, issue statements and act as a pseudo-synod without the entire hierarchy participating. Such decisions can in no way bind all hierarchs to such decisions unless it also enforces "blind obedience" from all those who are not members or serving under those who are.

Archbishop Stephen, who has been attacked by members of this pseudo-synod since 1994, had this to say. "This group has a history of attacking all those who are not part of them. In fact, Bishop Isaiah of Denver (letter on record) offered me a chance to return to the Greek Archdiocese in 1994.  This, an Archdiocese that I left in 1989 due to politics and abuses, was unacceptable because their terms were ludicrous at best. When I refused, they launched another smear campaign against me fueled by some public officials. How much good can come from an organization whose members fail to follow the teachings and examples of Christ God, and who have committed serious offenses, e.g. embezzlement in the OCA jurisdiction? The Greeks make claims that they defrocked certain clergy because they left their jurisdiction and one such statement almost twenty years after-the-fact, yet no authentic document is ever presented. Yet they sit with a feeling that they can destroy good people without having to answer for their actions."

Fortunately, SCOBA does not represent the whole of Orthodoxy, and what they do they will answer for. They do not speak for Orthodoxy in the United States, only for their organization. The errors and transgressions that they commit – are theirs, and not those of the good and faithful bishops of the true Orthodox Church in the United States. Many bishops in the United States have suffered their heinous attacks and maligning statements over many years. The very hierarch of the OCA (part of SCOBA) who joins with the Greek Archdiocese in their attacks against Archbishop Stephen, was in 2006 being investigated for embezzlement of Church funds. In fact, this group often ignores canons of the Church in order to execute their own agendas. This is far from canonical and yet they will readily point fingers at others who function under the canons and say that they are "not recognized by us and uncanonical." In many places now parishes who are in union with the hierarchs who belong to SCOBA will add on their parish signage and telephone listings – Member of SCOBA – proudly!! Who cares? It is far better to be a member of Christ's Church.

Another issue is that the "hierarchs" who belong to this organization think they are better than God. I have personally send over ten letters to both the Greek Archbishop and the OCA Archbishop, and their officials, asking them for their reasons of attack on our jurisdiction – both have never responded. I have requested of Archbishop Demetrios that he send me proof to verify statements against our Archbishop – he has never responded. Why, because lies and manufactured tales cannot be proven. I am personally very disenchanted with the actions of the hierarchs of both groups. However, I, like Archbishop Nathaniel, state that these men do not represent Orthodoxy in the United States, they represent only their personalized SCOBA.

Archbishop Stephen has remained silent on this issue since 1994, and he has sat back like an inanimate target allowing them (some members of SCOBA) to say what they wished. However, he stated this, "Such tactics cannot continue, and all those who have suffered because of them should speak out so the truth is known. They just refuse to leave innocent people alone and concentrate on cleaning up their own messes – which are very real."

It is also well known that money plays an integral part in who is accepted into SCOBA. So when you see a sign in front of an Orthodox Church that states that they are SCOBA Affiliated – think about what that means. If those claiming to be servants of God would practice the ways of Christ instead of hurting the reputations of others – articles like this one would not be necessary at all.

His Excellency Bishop Timothy of Duluth

MEMBERS WITHOUT A PARISH

The Syro-Russian Orthodox Catholic Church, like other small and smaller Orthodox jurisdictions, realizes that there are members who live far away from the nearest parish to them. In some cases, there exist parishes of other jurisdictions that are in communion with us or in which mutual recognition has been exchanged. In such cases our members may attend these churches until one of ours is opened in their locality. In other cases, there are those living in an area with no parish at all to attend, and for them they may belong to the Pro-Cathedral of St Mary and be on its rolls as a member. Such persons would be allowed to use the Typica Service within their homes on Sunday and Holy Days. Domestic Churches may be established in homes until a parish or mission can be officially established. "Distance Parishioners" would also be allowed to make their 10% tithe to St Mary's uniting them to the parish in good standing. For further information contact Bishop Timothy at  . If you are interested in assisting the Archdiocese to establish a mission parish in your area, please write to the same email address..

NIGERIAN DIOCESE ISSUED DIRECTIVE FROM METOPOLIA

[Imo State] His Beatitude Metropolitan Stephen, who has already issued warnings to the Diocese of Nigeria, has issued another warning and directive from the Metropolia. In a message sent to Father Joseph Okoro, and the interim vice-chancellor, Deacon Anthony, the Metropolitan advised all that "elections for new bishops are the responsibility of the Synod of Bishops, and not a particular diocese." He further explained that, "once all clergy have been canonically contacted, an assembly to nominate a successor to Bishop-elect Steven (Ehirih) could take place." Names of those nominated, along with their credentials, can then be sent to the Metropolia for review. Furthermore, it appears that the Bylaws prepared by the diocese are in conflict with the Statutes of the Syro-Russian Orthodox Catholic Church and such must be revised immediately.

SECOND STUDY CENTRE IN PAKISTAN

[Sargodha] In addition to St Cyril Syro-Russian Orthodox Catholic Study Centre" under the direction of Mr Sam Ahsan, there is now another new centre – Holy Cross of Jesus Syro-Russian Orthodox Catholic Study Centre of Sargodha, under the direction of Seminarian Cyril Shahzad. Both centers are involved in teaching others the faith of the Eastern Orthodox Catholic Church. Because there are no priests in either area, prayers services are conducted by those in charge for now.

ANNUAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION GATHERING

Dr Melodi Luko DCh has been appointed interim President of the Alumni Association for 2007-2008. We congratulate her and thank her for her acceptance.

Concerning reunions, such an event would initially consist of a social gathering of all alumni that would begin with a lunch followed by introductions and sharing of personal achievements since graduation by each alumnus. This would be followed by an address given by members of the administration that would be followed by dinner and some form of entertainment. It would be a one-day event. Dr Melodi Luko suggested that such an event be held every two years. The Metropolia has agreed with this suggestion and such an event will be held in all odd numbered years, e.g. 2007.

The College Administration is asking for nominations of a person to be appointed as President of the Alumni Association of St Mark-Romano Byzantine College. Alumni are asked to send their thoughts on both issues to Chancery Office, 1318 Baxter Avenue, Superior Wisconsin 54880-1762, or email them at  .

STUDY REGULATIONS ENFORCED

Romano Byzantine College and St Mark Seminary have always had very strict policies regarding distance education studies. Students are granted from 1-2 years, depending on process and number of credit points to be earned, to complete their essay and/or examination requirements. Those who do not meet the deadline must request a study extension and pay the appropriate fee. Should this policy not be followed in a timely manner, a student will be placed on probation and could possibly face process termination. If terminated the student would forfeit all tuition paid and possibly lose certain credit points being earned. The new policy approved in July 2006 now requires students wishing extensions to write directly to the Chancery Office, c/o College Administration, 1318 Baxter Avenue, Superior Wisconsin 54880-1762. Students are also required to submit an essay at least every 30-45 days.
