Special Report on Patriarch of Antioch

HOLY METROPOLIS REMEMBERS HIS BEATITUDE METROPOLITAN JOSEPH IV PRIMATE

By His Beatitude Metropolitan Stephen V Primate

Metropolitan Joseph Gabriel Sokolowski was born in Krakow Poland on October 27, 1903. He came to the United States in 1913 and founded St Paul Monastery (Rolling Prairie by LaPorte Indiana) in the 1950's. He was ordained a priest by Bishop Stephen Siniotis on February 13, 1957 but later through cheirothesia Bishop Francis Resch on May 22, 1961. On December 16, 1964, Archbishop Walter Xavier Brown named him Abbot General of the Oblate Fathers of St Benedict. On March 16, 1970, he was consecrated a Bishop by Metropolitan Joseph John Skureth assisted by Bishop Francis Blevins. In 1987, he announced that Bishop Stephen Thomas would be his successor and this was accepted by the Synod. His Beatitude died on April 2, 1989 at the age of 86.

During his monastic life, Metropolitan Joseph (as a priest and later bishop) spent many years working the six acres of St Paul Monastery to create a beautiful botanical garden and planted most of the many trees found on the property by himself. He built St Mary's Chapel on the same grounds that attracted many tourists from all over, and which was adorned inside with many old icons and beautiful altar-ware. He celebrated Sunday and Holy Day masses in the monastery center of St Paul's which was attended by many from the area as well as tourists. On occasions he would celebrate the Holy Mass in Latin for Latin for the many who missed hearing it in this language, and in Polish for  a group of Roman Catholic nuns from Illinois who loved hearing it in their native Polish. He traveled to many places securing antiques that were sold at St Paul Monastery to help maintain the grounds of the monastery. He worked many hours a day until arthritis set in and disabled him, but even then he did not fail to celebrate the Holy Liturgy of the Mass, often with assistance, on Sundays and Holy Days and at many other times, and often two masses per day. His Beatitude also cared for young homeless children or those in trouble giving them counseling and meals and sometimes a place to stay. He continued to work and serve until his arthritis spread so much that he could barely get around. His truly was a life of prayer and work just as the motto of the Benedictine Order states: "Ora et Labora" which means Pray and Work (Labor).

His Beatitude Metropolitan Joseph was indeed a sincere man and led a very active life serving and pleasing others until his death. The Church is proud of his accomplishments. We remember our IV Primate of the Church with only good thoughts in mind. I, personally, have many fond memories of this good man as a teacher, bishop, counselor, and a Primate that I was proud to serve. It has been hard following in his foot steps since 1989 as V Primate of the Church. May his soul, and the souls of all faithful departed, O Lord, rest in the sleep of peace. Amen!

AUDIENCE WITH HIS HOLINESS MOR IGNATIUS APHREM II, PATRIARCH OF ANTIOCH

 His Eminence Archbishop Timothy Kjera

On May 15th, 2014 His Beatitude Metropolitan Stephen and His Eminence Archbishop Timothy met with His Holiness Mor Ignatius Aphrem II at St Mark's Cathedral in Teaneck New Jersey. The meeting began with a delicious lunch made up of some Syrian delicacies and salads. We met several of the clergy as well as some visiting Bishops from the Assyrian and Armenian Orthodox Churches. His Holiness sat with us during lunch and advised us that we would accompany others to take a tour of what will become the new Eastern USA Archdiocesan Center. The property has a very large building that once was a convent and was very beautiful. This cost the Archdiocese 5 million dollars. It is expected that another 15 million dollars will be needed to renovate the building which will house many offices, residences, a chapel, meeting and conference rooms, and to build the new Cathedral.  At the end, we had an audience with His Holiness and discussed the possible reunification matter and after giving him our congratulations and best wishes, he gave us his blessing. It was a wonderful day and we were very pleased when we left. His Holiness is a very loving and kind man who gave us much attention during our visit. We wished him many years as we left, and we continually ask God to grant him many years as Patriarch of Antioch & All East!

WOMEN IN THE CHURCH

By Sr. Elizabeth Johnson:

Women, who form half of the world's population, work three-fourths of the world's working hours; receive one-tenth of the world's salary; own one percent of the world's land; form two-thirds of illiterate adults; and together with their dependent children form three-fourths of the world's starving people. To make a bleak picture worse, women are subject to domestic violence at home and are raped, prostituted, trafficked into sexual slavery and murdered by men to a degree that is not reciprocal. Regarding education, employment and other social goods, men have advantages simply by being born male. To point this out is not to make women into a class of victims but to underscore statistics that make clear the struggles women face in society because of their gender. In no country on earth are women and men yet treated in an equal manner befitting their human dignity. While in most cases the Roman Catholic church did not create these afflictions, its doctrine on women serves to reinforce women's suffering. The hierarchy teaches that though women and men are equal in worth and dignity, their physical and anatomical differences are evidence that God intends different roles and purposes for them. God designed men and women to complement each other, and their genders dictate their distinct roles in both church and society.

Not surprisingly, in this system, men are always awarded power, authority and dominance, while women are relegated to the roles of service, nurturing and adoration. Church leaders may insist that women and men are equal in dignity and worth, but ultimately, women are always put in the position of obedience to men. How can women ever achieve true empowerment when their religious leaders declare that it is God's plan that women are not entitled to equal religious or spiritual authority? How will women ever see true equality when the hierarchy teaches that even God believes that a woman's body is inadequate and invalid when it comes to possessing certain forms of power? If the Roman Catholic hierarchy declared that women were entitled to equal authority and power in the church, imagine the influence it could have in societies where religious and cultural beliefs have sanctioned the secondary status of women. The Roman Catholic church, with its presence in just about every country in the world, its billion members, and its especially charismatic pope could have an extraordinary impact on improving the dignity, worth and equality of women, especially in nations where women are dominated and devalued by the oppressive forces patriarchal culture. But first, the hierarchy would need the humility to admit that it cannot control whom God calls to the priesthood. They would have to stop blaming Jesus for their own refusal to lift up women to truly equal status in the church. They would have to acknowledge the radical injustice inherent in the idea that anatomy dictates who can and cannot have power in the church.

The struggle over women's ordination isn't a culture war issue. It is a movement that shines light on the truth that the Roman Catholic church's denial of the full equality of women has global consequences. It seeks to dismantle the poverty, abuse and violence that are intricately tied to the systematic belief that women and men are not equal. Women's ordination isn't simply about making women priests. It's about helping church leaders recognize that if they were to include women in their leadership as their equals, they could truly be a powerful force for economic and social justice for women and children throughout our world.

Editor's Note: Christ who is the Alpha & Omega selected twelve men to follow Him. These twelve men later became our first Bishop by the power of the Holy Spirit. From them, other men were chosen to be deacons and priests, and from the priests some became bishops who ordained other priests and consecrated other bishops – all men.. Christ set the example for what He wanted for His Church. How do we change what Christ Himself began? Women should have prominent roles in the Church, but not within the Holy Priesthood which is a "Tradition" upheld in the Roman and Orthodox Catholic Churches since the beginning of the Universal Church. The Old and New Testament clearly confirm a male rabbinical and priestly ministry.

GEORGIA CITY CHANGES ZONING ORDINANCE TO TREAT CHURCHES EQUALLY WITH NON-RELIGIOUS ASSEMBLIES

From "Religious Freedom in Focus"

In response to a Department of Justice investigation under the , the City of Eatonton, Georgia voted on May 19 to allow churches and other places of worship to be built as of right in two business and one light industrial district. The move equalizes the treatment of religious assemblies in the city with various non-religious assemblies. In response, the Department has closed its investigation. The Department had opened an investigation in response to a complaint from a small Christian church that said it was unable to find an affordable location in the city as a result of zoning regulations that disfavored places of worship relative to other place of assembly. The Department's investigation uncovered other churches that had faced problems finding an appropriate location. Section 2(b)(1) of RLUIPA provides that a religious assembly or institution must not be treated "on less than equal terms with a nonreligious assembly or institution."

Before the change adopted on May 19, within the General Commercial and Local Commercial zones, assembly halls, cultural facilities, fraternal organizations, funeral homes, and schools, colleges, universities, and technical schools were allowed as of right, while places of worship required a conditional use permit. Similarly, in the Light Industrial Zone, assembly halls, funeral homes, schools and technical schools were permitted, but places of worship were excluded entirely. With the ordinance change, places of worship will be allowed in these three zones as of right. Further information on the Civil Rights Division's work enforcing the land use provisions of RLUIPA, including questions and answers about RLUIPA and a report on the first ten years of Justice Department enforcement of RLUIPA, is available at the .

GEORGETOWN PROFESSOR AND DOJ LAWYER ENGAGE MALAYSIANS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM ISSUES

From "Religious Freedom in Focus"

In April, Georgetown University professor Timothy Shah and DOJ Special Counsel for Religious Discrimination Eric Treene travelled to Malaysia on a State Department-sponsored trip to discuss issues of religious tolerance and religious freedom with Malaysian government and community leaders. Approximately 60% of the population of Malaysia is Muslim, but Malaysia has active and sizable minority religious communities including Christians, Hindus, and Buddhists. The country is currently in the process of considering a national harmony law to address issues of discrimination and tolerance in a comprehensive way.

In meetings and speeches, Professor Shah, who is Associate Director of the , presented the findings of his research about religious freedom around the globe, showing that social conflict and hostilities based on religion increase the more that government regulates religion and takes sides on religious matters, and that they decrease when there is greater religious freedom and protection of religious minorities. Special Counsel Eric Treene discussed the fact that Malaysia and the United States, while very different countries with different histories, both are countries that are at the same time diverse and devout: in each country there are sizable populations of religious minorities, and in each country both members of the majority faith and members of minority faiths are devout, measured by criteria such as rates of weekly attendance at religious services and daily prayer. In presentations such as  on April 8, he described how the United States, from the time of the framing of the Constitution through adoption of comprehensive federal nondiscrimination laws in the 20th century, has sought to protect the religious freedom of both majority and minority faiths and create an environment where all faiths can flourish.

HOMELESS PROGRAM NEEDS DONATIONS
PLEASE CONSIDER A DONATION

[Sharon Pennsylvania] St Nicholas Center offers homeless men a home and guidance in return for work on the grounds. This program of the Archdiocese has helped over fifty men in the last four years. Nine of these men have been chrismated into the Orthodox Catholic Church coming from pasts that did not include any church affiliation. Currently, several men are being cared for at St Sophia's that includes their room, food, their prescriptions, toiletries, personal needs, the outings they enjoy, and the new life they have found centered on Christ. However, this is costing the Archdiocese much money and we are now brought to our knees asking for your assistance. We are in need of donations here so that our work started can continue. In addition to the homeless, we have also adopted seven kittens/cats that were destined to die without intervention. If you can find it in your heart to help with our expenses please send you donation to St Nicholas Center, 456 Nimick Street, Sharon PA 16146, or you may do so on your credit card through PayPal. Please make checks payable to "EOCC." We are 501(c)(3) tax exempt. Thank you.

TWO DISCOURCES IN CHRISTOLOGY

By Reverend Fr Seraphim Kanagaratnam CSB
Priest of the Syriac-Greek Antiochian Archdiocese in Malaysia

[Reprinted].
Please can I expound further on this subject i.e., Miaphysitism and  Theosis (Deification). But before I expound this subject let us study the thoughts of the two (2) Ancient Theological School of the early Church, namely the Antiochian and Alexandrian. The thoughts of the Antiochian Theological School. This School stressed the literal -historical interpretation of Holy Scriptures and the completeness of Christ humanity. They put a primacy on emphasizing the distinction of natures. Their literal - historical interpretation of Holy Scriptures incited them to assert the reality of the historical Christ in His "Human Nature" independent of the Divine Logos, who dwells in  Him (according to their  expression). The Antiochians thereby adopt "Word-Man" scheme and the formula "Two Natures". Divinity and humanity of Christ can be distinguished in Christ actions, Christ has a real, complete and independent humanity. The Antiochian school starting point of its Christology is "For in Him dwells the fullness of the Godhead bodily"- (St. Paul to Colossians : 2:9). The thoughts of the Alexandrian Theological School stressed the allegorical interpretation of Holy Scriptures and  Christ's Divinity. They put a primacy on emphasizing the Unity of person (much the way we emphasize the unity of human person, despite being composed of a dual nature sorts, the spiritual and physical). The Alexandrians thereby adopts "Word-Flesh" scheme and the formula  "The One Nature of God Incarnate".The Alexandrians school starting point of its Christology is "And the Word became flesh" (St.John 1:14).

Now let us discuss miaphysitism and theosis (Deification). The Alexandrian school because of its allegorical interpretation of Holy Scriptures adopts "Word-Flesh (St. John 1:14) scheme and the  formula "One Nature of God Incarnate ". Divinity and Humanity of Christ united in one Hypostatic Union. Two natures are united so close that they cannot be distinguished in the union. If Christ's suffering and saving works are not those of the divine but only of the Man, the redemption is undermined. Hence, the divine must unite with His flesh and must be involved in the suffering and saving works. Moreover, because Christ is the second Adam and a new regenerated race of mankind, the union of the divine with the flesh must close as one. In the process of the hypostatic union, the Word of God changes body, soul and spirit and thus transformed human nature itself. Now Christ can change the humanity and situation of every human being. All human beings have possibilities of immortality and perfection through Christ. The transformation of a person (believer) nature takes place through the union with Christ in the rituals of baptism and Eucharist. The dying and rising with Christ in baptism have a transformational effect on the soul and body of the person. The bread and wine in Holy Eucharist is mysteriously changed to Christ's Body and Blood after the celebrant's prayer of invocation to the Holy Spirit (Epiclesis). When a communicant eats Christ's body and drinks His blood, the person receives Christ's divine life through Christ's flesh.

We can see that the core of Alexandrian theology is Deification or the grace of renewal. The renewal of human nature as a whole, to attain sharing in the characteristics of our Savior in place of the corrupt human nature, or as the Apostle states - that the believer may enjoy " the partaking in the Divine Nature" (2 Peter:1-4) or "the new man in the image of His Creator "(Col: 3:10). The Core of Alexandrian theology can be revealed through St Athanasius statement that " The Word of God became man (enethraposen) so that we might be made gods (theopiethomen)". (On the Incarnation  PG. ch 54,{3  Vol xxv, col. 192B)

Humbly,
Father Seraphim

HELP FORM MISSION PARISHES & PRAYER GROUPS

The Syriac-Greek Antiochian Archdiocese of the Orthodox Catholic Church, like other small Orthodox jurisdictions, realizes that there are members who live far away from the nearest parish to them. In some cases, there are parishes of other jurisdictions that are in communion with us or in which mutual recognition has been exchanged. In such cases our members may attend those churches until one of ours is opened in their locality. In other cases, there are those living in an area with no parish at all to attend, and for them they may belong to an existing parish and be on its rolls as a member. Such persons would be allowed to use the Typica Service within their homes on Sunday and Holy Days. Domestic Churches, Chapels, and Communities may be established in homes until a parish or mission can be officially established. "Distance Parishioners" would also be allowed to make their 10% tithe to the parish attached to uniting them to it in good standing. For further information contact His Eminence Archbishop Timothy at rbsocc@juno.com or 456 Nimick Street, Sharon PA 16146. If you are interested in assisting the Archdiocese in establishing a mission parish in your area, please write to us.

Note: On April 25, 2014 it was learned from a contact of our Archdiocese   that Cyril Amer Shahzad was arrested for criminal activities and neglecting his pastoral and liturgical duties, and was subsequently suspended by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, at least for now according to the suspension decree. The decree was signed by Metropolitan Hilarion, First Hierarch.

RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH ABROAD MAKES UNCANONICAL MOVE

From the Archdiocesan Chancery

[Pakistan] The Holy Metropolis of the Syriac-Greek Antiochian Orthodox Catholic Church is deeply saddened and disturbed over what the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) has committed. In past years, our Church has sponsored the studies of several seminarians in Pakistan since early 1900's. Because of visa issues that we have been confronted with over the time, one seminarian, Cyril Amer Shahzad, began to look for someone to ordain him without completing studies. In 2011, along with his brother, he donated property to our jurisdiction for a mission parish to be formed under the name of St Michael Archangel. The document attesting to this are within our chancery. The Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia began corresponding with Mr Cyril Shahzad. This was done without our knowledge and with no consideration for canons whatsoever by them, or the fact that simony is against the laws of the Church and Holy Scripture! It was then reported to us by Mr Shahzad that in return for giving our property to the ROCOR he was ordained a priest by Metropolitan Hilarion of ROCOR.

According to assistant chancellor, Vincent Cappabianca CSB, "There once existed cordial dialogue between our Holy Metropolis and the previous two ruling hierarchs of ROCOR. However, this dialogue is now suspended due to the situation that now exists." The Archdiocese has records showing that Cyril Amer Shahzad, along with his brother, donated a parcel of land in Sargodha Pakistan to the Church on June 13, 2011. According to His Eminence Archbishop Timothy, "In an email from His Beatitude to Mr Shahzad dated October 30, 2012, the Metropolitan's unhappiness with him concerning his actions and how he was ordained were expressed. Mr Shahzad advised His Beatitude that he joined with ROCOR in October 2012 and was ordained soon thereafter and after signing the property over to ROCOR." Because of this our Archdiocese cannot recognize the ordination performed by ROCOR. On June 17, 2013, in an email to the chancery office, Cyril Amer Shahzad, (listed as rector of St Sergius Orthodox Church of Sargodha), stated that he was ordained on January 14, 2013 by Metropolitan Hilarion (Kapral), First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, Metropolitan of Eastern America and New York, Archbishop of Sydney Australia and New Zealand. With this verification, we are stunned and truly saddened over this matter. Since this happened it was reported to us that Cyril Amer Shahzad was suspended from the priesthood of ROCOR for negligence in his priestly duties and some criminal offenses.

THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

By Susan Harris / Politics and Social Welfare

The Forgotten War

There is a war that has been raging on for decades, but the world's focus never seems to spotlight it. In fact, the world has turned a blind eye. The most appalling and atrocious acts are happening on a daily basis to young children, but no one seems to help or care. Children are being used as sex slaves and  forced to do terrible things to other humans. These children will be scarred for the rest of their lives, because of the things they have seen or been forced to do. "Out of sight out of mind" seems to be the stance our nations are taking. Not many reports, videos, or pictures are readily released on the internet to stir up concern by humanity. If the atrocities that were occurring in the Congo were happening in rural America, the country would be outraged. Imagine our young children, some as young as second grade, performing sex acts on adult males, or being a part of a group gang rape. Men taking turn after turn destroying a young girl or boy's virtuousness. Try if you can to imagine a young 8 year old American child who is still pure and innocent and singing "Let it Go" from the movie being forced to kill everyone in their family, then being forced to chop up those family members into small fleshy pieces, and finally being forced to eat them afterwards. Imagine that story on the 6 o'clock news. It's unimaginable but acts like this are happening every day in a country in Africa. The physical and mental damage being done to these children is unimaginable, but yet it continues day after day.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has been in a state of warfare for decades. Children have been forcefully recruited and kidnapped from their families. Orphans have been ripped from the streets and thrown into a hell that is inconceivable in the United States. Children as young as eight years old have been forced to commit terrible acts on humanity. Some children have even volunteer for this brutal life because they lack food, shelter, love, education, and family. Even after the creation of a law to stop the recruitment and the use of children soldiers; there are still over 10,000 child soldier today in the Congo. Millions of innocent civilians have died since the beginning of this war decades ago. Half of those dead are children under the age of five. Our American children of the age of five are just beginning Kindergarten and learning their letter sounds. In the Congo, they are being shot, mutilated, or blown to pieces. This war has been occurring for many reasons such as lack of resources, lack of development in the country, lack of education, and lack of humane and responsible leadership. One could talk about the ins and outs of the war and the reasons behind the rebel groups' motivations but that would take the focus off of the children who are the real victims in this ordeal. Many children in the Congo are uneducated and not taken care of. They have been orphaned or stolen from their families and "fed to the wolves". They are learning this way of life and they are growing into adults who continue this bloody warfare.

The children's voices have been lost and the innocent civilians have been silenced. This has all happened in a world of social media and the internet, which sounds unthinkable. How can our population be so uninformed about the blights that are occurring overseas? Instead, we have placed our focus onto the next foolish thing Miley Cyrus will do, or when Kim and Kanye's wedding will be. The other disappointing fact is the people who can bring attention to this forgotten war by using their celebrity status have chosen not to. Instead, famous individuals choose to focus on things like legalizing marijuana or the latest hair styles. Sadly, our news stations have also chosen to turn a blind eye, instead they report on "grumpy cats" and have taken the focus off of the real news and events occurring in the world. During World War II the world stated that they would never turn their back on mass acts of genocide again but what is happening in the Congo is an ongoing act of mass genocide. Instead of using gas chambers, they are using guns and children as weapons.

Editor's Note: The Syriac-Greek Antiochian Orthodox Catholic Church has over seven mission parishes in the DR of Congo plus two convents for nuns and other missionary work going on there. Communication with the Archdiocese in the United States has been cut off now for over two months. The Archdiocese has been advised by the First Diocese of Nigeria & All Africa that communications are down in the Congo and this is the reason that there has been silence from there and no communication with the Archdiocese. The Church prays for all our faithful and the innocent there and hopes that the fighting there, and in other countries, stops soon. If anyone wishes to make a tax-deductible contribution to help the homeless and missionary work in the Congo, please send it to the address of OCH on heading of newsletter payable to "EOCC" and note it is for "Disaster in the Congo."

NOTES ON TERRORIST ATTACK IN NIGERIA

Sent from His Excellency Archbishop Anthony of Nigeria

Editor's Note: The Diocese of Nigeria & All Africa has advised the Holy Metropolis of the wars that are going on in certain parts of Nigeria. This affects many people there and elsewhere including members of our Church. The Archdiocese has several parishes and missions throughout Nigeria along with St Athanasius Seminary. We pray for an end to the atrocities that are taking place there that have killed many people and injured even more. If any wish to make a tax-deductible donation to help those who are suffering please send it to us at the OCH address on heading of newsletter. Make checks out to "EOCC" and note the donation for - "Disaster in Nigeria."

[Nigeria] The Congregation of the People of Tradition for Proselytism and Jihad (Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati Wal-Jihad), known by its Hausa name Boko Haram, figuratively meaning "Western education is sin"), is a terrorist organization based in northeastern Nigeria, north Cameroon and Nigeria. Founded by Mohammed Yusuf in 2002, the organization seeks to establish a "pure" Islamic state ruled by sharia,[12] putting a stop to what it deems Westernization. The group is known for attacking Christians, Muslims and government targets, as well as for bombing churches, mosques, schools and police stations. The group also kidnaps western tourists and has assassinated members of the Islamic establishment who have criticized the group. Violence linked to the Boko Haram insurgency has resulted in an estimated 10,000 deaths between 2002 and 2013.

The group exerts influence in the northeastern Nigerian states of Borno, Adamawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe and Kano. In this region, a state of  emergency has been declared. The group does not have a clear structure or  evident chain of command and has been called "diffuse" with a "cell-like structure" facilitating factions and splits. It is reportedly divided into three factions with a splinter group known as Ansaru. The group's main leader is Abubakar Shekau. Its weapons expert, second-in-command and arms manufacturer, was Momodu Bama. The Boko Haram leadership has international connections to Al-Qa`ida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Al-Qa`ida core, Al-Shabab, the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), Mokhtar Belmokhtarâ factions, and other militant groups outside Nigeria. Attacks by the group on international targets have so far been limited. On November 13, 2013 the United States government designated the group a terrorist organization. On 22 May 2014, the United Nations Security Council added Boko Haram to its list of designated al-Qaeda entities, bringing "funding, travel and weapons sanctions" against the terrorist group.[26][27].

The insurgent is mainly affecting the northern states of Nigeria and the Middle belt, it has not come to the south yet. However several of our churches and missions are in the Middle belt. I was supposed to be there for a foundation laying ceremony of a new church building and chrismation of faithfuls but could not go due to attacks on the road by these militant groups. We continue to pray for their repentance and peaceful co-existence of everyone in the country.
