BISHOP DEPOSED FOR SERIOUS INFRACTIONS

From His Eminence Archbishop Timothy

[Cleveland OH] Simeon Robert Anderson was admitted to the Metropolis in 2007 because of the request of another bishopwho is now deposed and fled the United States. Simeon was unknown to us at the time the deposed bishop Sava Cosas asked our Synod to accept him and make him a bishop to serve the Syriac-Greek Antiochian Metropolis. At that time Simeon advised the Metropolis that he was originally a professed Benedictine monk who was ordained a Roman Catholic priest, and later received into the Orthodox Church. Our investigation conducted from June 2008 until October 2009 was most revealing. The Benedictines of Lisle Illinois advised that he was never a professed monk, and that he left them right after temporary vows without any notice. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago Illinois was not able to substantiate his ordination to the priesthood, and an independent bishop allegedly performed his ordination in the Orthodox Church.

During our investigation of his activities we found that he was violating many policies of the Ohio Department of Health with regard to St Brendan Assisted Living Home, an apostolate that for almost three years he abused. An audit was conducted by clergy and members of the laity that found he spent sums of church money ordering personal items from Ebay and other places. It also proved that he had bought many items that were not authorized with this money from the assisted living operation including a Cadillac, and that thousands of dollars was given to the aforementioned Sava Cosas, a man convicted of over ten felonies who fled the United States just before sentencing. Simeon also violated his vows and did little work but online surfing. When he was advised that he would have to work at the Chancery House instead of his own private office, he became very angry.  The Department of Health investigated our complaint and on December 8, 2009 wrote Metropolitan Stephen stating: "After a thorough review of the allegations, and based on the findings of the investigation completed, the surveyor was able to substantiate your complaint. The appropriate actions were issued to the operator of the facility and the appropriate corrective and enforcement action as allowed by the licensure statute and rules will be taken." However, Simeon advised many that no action was taken against him, and sent an email to Metropolitan Stephen stating, "...your plan failed." He then wrote a very vindictive letter filled with maligning statements and sent it to several clergy and providers of the Archdiocese filled also with lies. During this time, and even in October 2009, Simeon was given many opportunities to reconcile with the Church, but he refused asking that we just forget all and let him be. However, he kept sending his letters and emails filled with venemous statements that he thought the Metropolis would not hear about.

There are now other investigations going on both in the Church and in the State the Metropolis knows about, but that cannot be disclosed at this time. Simeon has enlisted another deposed bishop to assist him with his malfeasance, but in most cases is only landing on deaf ears. His letter of November 9, 2009 was sent to the Metropolis by many people that were very upset with the things he said, and the way in which they were said. There is a taped conversation with Simeon that was witnessed by a member of the laity, in which he makes a partial confession. Although he tried to have Peter Sedesse take these from the Metropolis, as well as destroy the audit reports, it did not turn out as he planned. Peter Sedesse also turned out to be a wrongdoer after he sided with Simeon so he could have a place to stay after he was dismissed from the Chancery House. Metropolitan Stephen has requested that anyone wishing more information than what we have allowed in this advisement should contact me, Archbishop Timothy, at the Metropolis.

SYRIAC AND GREEK APOSTOLIC SUCCESSIONS OF ANTIOCH

His Eminence Archbishop Timothy
January 12, 2010

The Eastern Orthodox Catholic Archdiocese of the Americas and Dependencies (Syriac-Greek Antiochian) possesses two lines of Apostolic Succession from Antioch and St Peter the Apostle. The first and original line comes from the Syriac Patriarchate of Antioch and the second from the Greek Patriarchate of Antioch. Both lines are traced back to St Peter the Apostle. The Syriac line separates from the Greek at about A.D. 518 when Paul II, a follower of the Council of Chalcedon, became Patriarch of Antioch (Greek), and Severius the Great continued to lead the Non-Chalcedonian Syriac Patriarchate. The two Patriarchates were primarily separated over the Christology issue and other matters that came from the five last Ecumenical Councils of the Church. Today, His Holiness Ignatius Zakka I is the Syriac Patriarch of Antioch. In this article I would like to concentrate on the Syriac Patriarchate and its line of Apostolic Succession from St Peter the Apostle in our God-protected Church.

From its beginning, the patriarchs of the Holy Eastern Orthodox Church of the See of Antioch shared the same faith, from our first Patriarch in A.D. 37 (some say A.D.38), St Peter, to the 24th Patriarch in A.D. 324, Ostatheos, there was unity in faith. However, with Eulalius in A.D. 331, the Arians took over the Patriarchate until in A.D. 456 when Basil of Antioch was elected and returned the See to the Chalcedonians for a time. The Syriac See of Antioch went through much turmoil with its patriarchs being at times followers of the Council of Chalcedon and at other times being non-Chalcedonian. This eventually led to the establishment of the Greek Patriarchate of Antioch and its line of Apostolic Succession in A.D. 518 beginning with Paul II. Our Church is rightly called " Syriac-Greek Antiochian" since the Syriac line of Apostolic Succession was given to His Beatitude Metropolitan Timotheos (Vilathi) in 1892 at his consecration with the blessing of His Holiness Ignatius Peter III (Syriac) whose lines date back to St Peter. The Greek line of Apostolic Succession was given to His Beatitude Metropolitan Joseph John (Skureth) in 1966 at his consecration that is traced back to His Holiness Gregorios IV (Greek) whose lines date back to St Peter.

From the time of St Peter until the separation and the existence of the now two lines of succession, the Holy Patriarchate and See of Antioch shared the same leadership. It was St Ignatius of Antioch who called the Church, Universal, which translates to Catholic from the Greek word, Katholikos. St Peter established the Apostolic See of Antioch that was blessed by the Holy Apostles Paul and Barnabas. The other disciples and followers of Jesus Christ came to Antioch after the martyrdom of St Stephen the Protomartyr and Archdeacon. At that time the believers of Christ consisted of Jews and Gentiles, and the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul consecrated two bishops to oversee them, St Ignatius for the believers of Jewish origin, and St Evodius for the gentile believers. It is actually the Holy See of Antioch that can truly claim St Peter the Apostle as its first Patriarch, or using another term, Pope. This is a historical and biblical fact. Jesus Christ spoke Syriac Aramaic, as did His mother, the Theotokos. The Holy Apostles spoke Syriac and knew no other language, according to the great Church historian, Eusebius. It was in Antioch of Syria that the followers of the Lord were first called " Christians" and that the Church was called "Catholic." The Church of Antioch embraced many cultures including the ancient cultures of Syria. It is also from Syria that the faith of Jesus Christ was spread to many other regions of the world.

In the early Church, all the patriarchs of both East and West were in communion with one another accepting the same doctrines of faith and fully recognizing each other. The Apostolic Sees of Rome, Antioch, Alexandria, Jerusalem, and Constantinople were all united as one Church. However, after the Council of Chalcedon in A.D. 451, the one Christian Church split into groups that pronounced mutual anathemas and exchanged false accusations against one another. However, today, many of the schisms are healing, and the shepherds of the various Churches are working to mend the divisions that were caused many years before. The Syriac-Greek Antiochian Synod of Bishops prays for closer relations with the Syriac Patriarchate of Antioch, as well as other Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches, and has worked for better relations and closer fraternity with many of them since 1989. Prayers for unity still flow from our hearts and lips to Almighty God. We recently heard a homily given by the Primate of the (Russian) Orthodox Church in America, His Beatitude Metropolitan Jonah, and in this speech he called for unity among all Orthodox Christians, and told the attendees that the Orthodox Churches in America must embrace one another. It is so easy to speak such words from the mouth, but the proof of what is really in the heart comes from the actions of he who speaks the words. Time will show if the words spoken by Metropolitan Jonah were true and sincerely meant.

METROPOLIS SUSPENDS QUARTERLY OBLATIONS

[Cleveland OH] His Beatitude Metropolitan Stephen advised His Eminence Archbishop Timothy, and the Archdiocesan Vicar General, His Grace Bishop Simeon, that the Metropolis will no longer accept quarterly payments of oblations until further notice. According to His Beatitude, " This has caused a major strain on the Church, and has made it necessary to maintain records and additional bookkeeping that is not serving the best interest of the Church. Furthermore, some have abused this option making it even more necessary to have all clergy participate in a monthly oblation program." In 2008, the Metropolis lost over $3,600.00 in oblations that were not made because of quarterly oblations forgotten and additional revenue due to some who made no effort to give and who did not request exemption. Archbishop Timothy stated that, "The Metropolis operates on a very strict and tight budget that includes the Archdiocese, missionary works of the Church, the poor who approach the Metropolis, the indigent, aged, and sick clergy of the Archdiocese, the various apostolates, and others. This all plus the maintenance and continuity of the Metropolis itself and all its various departments." This policy was effective on June 1st, 2009. Chartered and Accredited Centers of the Archdiocese and Commission are also to participate in the monthly oblation and shall now be required to do so as of June 1st , 2009. For more information and/or guidance in this matter, please contact the Metropolis.

RETREAT CENTER BECOMES NEW HEADQUARTERS
FOR METROPOLIS

The Metropolis has recently acquired a commercial property that was a motel in Canfield Ohio. They hope to convert the property into an Inn and Retreat Center. The Metropolis sees a great deal of potential in the property, so much so that they have moved the Archdiocesan Headquarters there.

The motel has 25 rooms and is situated on on over 3 acres of property just outside the Youngstown suburb. They will be renting out the refurbished rooms as the work on the remodeling of the building and landscaping of grounds continues. They have a provisional chapel and will be building a larger chapel on the grounds to accompany the planned Nature & Meditation paths. They hope to offer weekly seminars and geaways for individuals and families as well as an outreach to the less fortunate in the area. The amount of time and money so far invested has been substantial but there is still plenty left to be done.

St Sophia Monastery Inn & Retreat Center will have its ribbon-cutting ceremony on Febuary 11, 2010. Archbishop Timothy says "We are able [with this property] to offer low cost housing, counseling, and spiritual guidance on a larger scale than at our facility in Cleveland. We hope to make this a haven and destination for all who seek the Lord and His guidance." For those who would like to make a contribution please feel free to write or click here.

ORTHODOX BITS N' PIECES

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q. What is a "Chorbishop"? (Anthony Kostelnik, Indiana)

A. Chorbishops (Chorepiscopi) are first mentioned in the second century by Eusebius, and at that time were only found in the East. At that time, they exercised all the episcopal functions of a bishop but only within their rural districts. However, from the second part of the third century they were subject to the local metropolitan bishop. At the Synod of Ancyra (AD 314) they were specifically forbade to ordain deacons or priests, as is still the case today. The Council of Sardica (AD 343) decreed that no chorepiscopus should be consecrated where a priest will be sufficient. The first mention in the Roman Church of this office was in the 5th or 6th century and was found mainly in Germany and the Frankish lands. In some jurisdictions they were replaced by archdeacons, and in others by mitred archimandrites or archpriests, but they are still found today in others such as the Malankara Indian Orthodox Church, Syrian, Syriac-Greek Antiochian, to name a few, as well as some Eastern - Byzantine Catholic Churches. In the Melkite Greek Catholic Church it is an honorific title similar to monsignor. In the Syriac Orthodox Church, Assyrian Orthodox Church, Chaldean Catholic Church, Maronite Catholic Church, Syriac-Greek Antiochian Orthodox Church, Syro-Malabar Orthodox Church, and others, it is the equivalent of an auxiliary bishop with limited episcopal powers. In these jurisdictions a chorbishop dresses almost identically as a bishop and in most also wears a mitre, and he serves as the representative of the local bishop at certain events.

Q. Who is Saint Barnabas? (Jerome Szamanski, Indiana)

A. St Barnabas is a first century saint born Joseph and was an early Christian convert. He was one of the earliest Christian disciples in Jerusalem and was born to a Jewish family, specifically a Levite. Termed an apostle, he and St Paul undertook missionary journeys together and defended Gentile converts in Antioch (c A.D. 43-44) and participated in the Council of Jerusalem (c A.D. 50). They also evangelized and converted many gentiles who attended synagogues in various Hellenized cities of Anatolia. Barnabas' story appears in Acts of the Apostles and St Paul mentions him in some of his epistles. Tertullian named him as the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews. He is traditionally identified as the founder of the Cypriot Church, and was martyred at Salamis in A.D. 61. His feast day is celebrated on June 11th.

Q. When was it decided that bishops of the Church could no longer marry? (Ann Duffy, Chicago IL)

A. The Canons of Trullo, which was a particular council of Constantinople, held in A.D. 692 convened by Justinian with 215 bishops attending, made this decision. The canon stated that all clerics were allowed to continue to marry, if so desired, except for bishops.

Q. Were there ever any married Popes in the Roman Catholic Church? (Don Bliss, Marion IN)

A. During a time when the Roman and Orthodox Church shared communion, i.e., prior to A.D.1054, the Roman Church had several married popes and some had sons who later became popes. It should be remembered that the early Church also had married bishops, e.g., all the Holy Apostles were married, even St Peter, except for St John the Evangelist.

Q. Please explain "Miaphysitism"? (Andrew Poulos, Los Angeles CA)

A. Miaphysitism is also sometimes referred to as "Henophysitism." Some confuse this with Monophysitism, like the Chalcedonians, but it is not and the Oriental Orthodox reject this. This is the Christology of the Oriental Churches that has been changing over the past twenty years to meet the Christology of the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Churches. The difference of opinion came into existence at the Council of Chalcedon in A.D. 451, but many theologians feel it was more an issue of semantics than theology. There are some Independent Catholic Churches who also profess this belief in the natures of Christ. This Christology teaches that in the one person of Jesus Christ, the Divine and Human are actually united in one "nature," and the two united without separation, without confusion, and without alteration.

The Roman and Eastern Orthodox Catholics believe that there are two natures in the one Person of Jesus Christ, i.e., God and man. This does not mean "two persons" in Christ. That He was the incarnate Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the only-begotten Son of God, fully God and fully man born in time of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was true God and true man, without separation and without confusion, a single person but endowed with two wills and two energies. These two natures were hypostatically united into the one personhood of Jesus Christ who was begotten before all time by God the Father. Hypostatic Union is a term to describe how God the Son, Jesus Christ, took on human nature yet remained God. Jesus has always been God from eternity to eternity, but at the Incarnation became man from the Virgin Mary. Jesus Christ, one Person, fully God and fully man - and this is the hypostatic union.

DOMESTIC PARISHES & PRAYER GROUPS

The Syriac-Greek Antiochian Archdiocese of the Eastern Orthodox Catholic Church, like other small Orthodox jurisdictions, realizes that there are members who live far away from the nearest parish to them. In some cases, there are parishes of other jurisdictions that are in communion with us or in which mutual recognition has been exchanged. In such cases our members may attend those churches until one of ours is opened in their locality. In other cases, there are those living in an area with no parish at all to attend, and for them they may belong to an existing parish and be on its rolls as a member. Such persons would be allowed to use the Typica Service within their homes on Sunday and Holy Days. Domestic Churches, Chapels, and Prayer Groups may be established in homes until a parish or mission can be officially established. "Distance Parishioners" would also be allowed to make their 10% tithe to the parish attached to uniting them to it in good standing. For further information contact His Eminence Archbishop Timothy at rbsocc@juno.com or St Sophia Monastery Inn and Retreat Center, 7815 Akron Canfield Road, Canfield OH 44406. If you are interested in assisting the Archdiocese in establishing a mission parish in your area, please write to us.
